DBASESAMPLES and various other aliases are now User BDE Aliases. See
attached.

If you note there is information in the book, that these haven't been
updated for a while, and I can't tell where they came from. I reference
them because they are installed with dBASE, though.

Hmm. Well, I am not quite sure what the FoxBase user was complaining
about, or what they expected. But oh well.

The alias in the Properties Dialog should be (as shown in the
attachment) dBASESamples.

I am not sure why you had to jump through all these hoops, by default
the aliases that should be working automatically are User BDE Aliases,
in the PLUS.INI file, and should show up with the correct names in the
Properties dialog.
