Hey folks,
Either I'm the last to know, or I've been missing some serious notes on
what to do.
I just spent time going through my 'Samples' directory, changing all the
references to "DBASESAMPLES" to "Samples", as the in app BDE link never
made the connect and it was throwing errors all over the place.
I started looking because I just got the 3rd Edition of Ken's book from
Amazon of the dBASE Book Plus: Companion, and was reading about some of
the things, one of which was the discovery of the Lookup tables that Ken
mentioned had been slipped in, with tables for Cities, States, etc.
By the way Ken, royalties coming, but Amazon is a pain to review your
stuff....as some FoxBase user was crying about your books not being
advanced enough and Amazon wouldn't let me make a review since I had't
supposedly spent enough in the last 12 months...but I just did, so that
made no sense...anyway, I digress.
Anyway, I already made my own table with States, so no biggie, but
still, I had to check it out...and I came across a LookupSQLtest.wfm
form in the Samples directory and confusingly, ran it thinking the
LookupTables would appear, when I got the error that "DBASESAMPLES"
could not be found...so checking the desktop properties, User BDE
Alias's dialog, I noticed that the only similar BDE Alias was
SAMLES....so I started changing them, ran into the Samples.wfm file, ran
that...and it started to work until I tried to run an application that
still claimed it couldn't find DBASESAMPLES and I couldn't find it in
the stopped file after checking the code. Then on a hunch, I check the
Samples.dbf, and there they are, declaring that the proper BDE Alias was
DBASESAMPLES, so I changed all those entries to reflect the proper
SAMPLES database alias and got them all to work that were supposed to.
I should list this as a bug report, since obviously the alias names got
changed without changing the code references to it in the files,
referencing it. :)
Anyway, had some fun and new stuff to look at, but still...if I was a
terribly new person, that would be a real scare me away from the
platform moment when I couldn't run code that was supposed to show me
how to write code by looking at 'working' examples. :(
