dBASE 8 will only work on Windows XP or earlier versions of Windows. If
you have Windows 7, 10 or 11 as the operating system on your computer
then it will have to be dBASE 9 or better.
Several bugs were fixed in each version of dBASE versions subsequent to
dBASE 9 so there are more bugs in dBASE 9 than in dBASE 2019. There
are, however, work-a-rounds for most bugs so any that you come across
shouldn't be a show-stopper.
For dBASE 12 there was a move from a Borland compiler to a Microsoft
compiler and the Microsoft Foundation classes. This brought with it
additional working space behind the scenes which address some problems
that had been experienced with large complicated forms.
dBASE 2019 introduced some new features such as the ARRAYROWSET, RICH
EDIT and MENUBAR classes.
It depends on what you want to do. If you don't need the extra features
dBASE 9 may well be what you need. You can always upgrade to dBASE 2019
if you find that dBASE 9 can't do what you want.
Completing the dBASE tutorial available from Ken Mayer's website at
http://www.goldenstag.net/dbase/ is almost an essential requirement.
The tutorial includes a list of recommended reading.
The tutorial has its own newsgroup to help deal with any problems you
may encounter. Once you've completed the tutorial you are more than
welcome to ask for help in this newsgroup.
While you're at Ken's website download the dUFLP as well.
