In dBASE 12, the code you used is a bug that crashes 12. Although they seemed to have fixed that bug using the code you do in 2019, it at least doesn't crash for you, so as far as I can tell, it indeed is dBASE, dealing with whatever error that existed in 12, but taking it's time doing it. I don't have an active 2019 as I didn't upgrade to it, but the testing I did when I used the Time limited, did fix this bug..I just didn't test it to the point of opening code files afterward so can't speak to that issue.
