You may want to open the BDE Administrator, and make sure it knows
you're working with level 4 tables.

In the BDE Administrator:

    Click the Configuration Tab
    Click the + by Configuration
    Click the + by Drivers
    Click the + by Native
    Click the + by DBASE

On the right, you will see "LEVEL" ... the default is 7. Change it to
four. Press Ctrl+A (save all changes). Exit the BDE Administrator ...

Now see if you can make the changes you've been trying.
