Your name was mentioned as it just happens that the server has been
playing silly buggers with messages that you happened to write.  The
following is applicable to all users who access the newsgroups via
Web-News.

Apart from being available as an NNTP feed, the link on the dBASE
webpage to the newsgroups uses Web-News to access the newsgroups.  It's
a quick an easy way for the company to introduce newcomers to the
newsgroups.  Using Web-News can, however, be a real PITA.  One has to
log in regularly and troll the newsgroups for new messages and replies
to messages.

Once one has found the newsgroups one should switch to an NNTP feed as
soon as possible. This means that by using a suitable newsreader client
the messages in the newsgroups behave just like email.  New messages and
replies in the newsgroups you are interested get delivered to your
computer just like email.

Some email clients can handle an NNTP feed, some can't.  Windows Live
Mail does, the newer Windows Mail doesn't.  If the email client you use
doesn't support NNTP then I suggest using Thunderbird.  There are, of
course, many other suitable newsgroup readers available but I use
Thunderbird for email and the newsgroups so I'm a bit biased.

One quirk with Thunderbird is that one uses the "Follow up" button to
reply to messages and the "Reply" button to reply to email.

To set up an NNTP feed use news.dbase.com as the server name.  If you
also need a server name for replies use the same server.  Neither a
username nor a password is required and for the rest you can either
accept the default setting or change to your preference.  Set the
newseader to check for new messages regularly.

On a public, no username required, newsgroup it is usual to include
No_spam somewhere in you email address to guard against spam-bots.  I've
gone the whole hog and use invalid@invalid.invalid as my email address.

Once you have set up an NNTP account you will be presented with a list
of available newsgroups.  Subscribe to those you are interested in and
you're in business. :-)

Mervyn.
