I wonder if that is because you are using a screen metric of "chars" or
"inches" or similar, rather than pixels ?
If you work in pixels (which is what your screen consists of), then you
have an easily visualised grid to work on, and if you choose easy
heights and widths then things can be easy to code directly.
For example, with an entryfield height of 19 or 20, you can place the
top of each entryfield in a vertical column of entryfields at
0,20,40,60,80 . . . directly in code, knowing that everything will line
up perfectly.
