It is nothing to do with Firebird being "up to the job".
If you have your own server you have control over what you install and
use.
If you have a hosted virtual server you have some control over what you
install and use.
If you use a hosting package, you will most probably find that what was
historically available or provided was MySQL, and that your provider has
now switched to MariaDB.
